Dog Policy

Our Downtown Hillsboro Saturday Market is pet-friendly.

We ask customers who plan on bringing dogs to adhere to the following safety rules at our Downtown Hillsboro Saturday Market to make the pet’s visit to the market a good experience for everyone:

  1. Dogs must be friendly and socialized.

  2. Dogs must always be on a short leash and in full control at all times.

  3. Clean up any mess created by your dog.

  4. Dogs are not permitted to enter vendor booths selling produce, food, or plants.

  5. Disruptive or aggressive dogs will be required to leave immediately.

  6. Be courteous when approaching a dog and ask permission before requesting to pet an unfamiliar dog.

Market Manager reserves the right to ask that owners remove pets from the market.

Our Orenco Station Sunday Market does not allow dogs or pets. Service animals are welcome.

We ask customers to adhere to our no dog policy at the Orenco Station Sunday Market. Service animals are allowed at the Market.  Service animals are defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which specifies that only dogs which have been individually trained to perform a specific task for a person with a disability qualify as service animals.  Animal companions that provide emotional support do NOT qualify as service animals. Dogs and pets will be permitted to be carried or placed in strollers. Customers with dogs in the market space will be asked to move to the sidewalk behind the market area.

HFM Board Note Regarding DOG Policy Decisions

Thanks for your interest in learning more about the HFM dog policy. The topic of dogs at the markets is a long-standing one with differing opinions from our market customers. Our market team conducted an extensive survey of market customers in 2019. It was established at that time that our customer base is split 50/50, with half of our customers enjoying dogs at markets and half of our customers preferring dogs and pets be left at home. In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions were in play and both markets had a no dog policy during that time. With continued community feedback and the removal of COVID-19 restrictions, the Board of Directors reviewed the dog policy in the summer of 2021. The decision to have separate policies per market was based on data collected, available space at each market, and overall impact on the markets.

We understand that our customers are passionate on both sides of this topic and not everyone will agree with the decision to have dogs at one market and not at the other. However, the HFM Board is confident that we have come to the right decisions considering all of the factors.

Abuse of our market staff or volunteers based on this policy will not be tolerated.
