Vendor Profile: Portland Fish Market

IMG_3109-1What is your name and where are you from?

Portland Fish Market is owned and run by two families: Brandi & Mike Shirley and Ben and Agnes Berkowitz. The Shirley family lives in Molalla and the Berkowitz family lives in SE Portland.

What is your background?

Both families lived for a while in San Diego. Even though our time there overlapped, we actually didn’t know each other. Ben and Mike worked in property management there and Agnes worked in Software. It wasn’t until we eventually moved to Oregon that we all became friends.

What is the name of your business and what do you specialize in?

Portland Fish Market. We bring wild, local, fresh fish from our friends at the coast to the Portland area.

We opened in August 2014 (we just celebrated our 2-year anniversary!)

What led you to start your own business?

Mike and Ben have been fishing Oregon waters together for over a decade. We realized that we were the lucky ones, having fresh local fish for dinner on a regular basis. We wanted to bring that to our Portland friends, and it just grew from there.

How does living in Oregon influence your business?

The Oregon coast provides us with some of the best seafood in the world. From Albacore tuna in the summer to Dungeness crab in the winter, the seafood here is phenomenal.

We are the only all-wild fish market in Portland. We do not carry farmed fish.

What is your favorite thing about owning your own business?

Our customers are the best! We’ve met so many people who come in and are apprehensive about cooking fish. We send them home with some advice and a recipe card, and we see them again the next week, and the week after. And their recipes start to get more adventurous. We love that!

How long have you been involved in the farmer’s market?

This is our first year.

What is your favorite thing about the farmer’s market?

We love the customers and our fellow vendors. You really get a sense of community working at the farmer’s market.

Vendor Profile: JenStone Kreations

JenStone Kreations is the name of Jenny Kreafle’s business. Jenny is a local artist who specializes in beautiful and intricate rock paintings.

What is your background?

I grew up in Scappoose, OR and attended Oregon State University. I currently teach 2nd grade in St. Helens, OR.

What is the name of your business and what do you specialize in?

JenStone Kreations; rock painting. Aside from the rock art at my show, my favorite thing to do is personalized orders for customers. I also paint glass Christmas ornaments, repaint yard ornament/statues, and recently was asked to paint a simple mural on a shed. All of these creative outlets are a gift that I find immense joy at doing.

When did you start JenStone Kreations?

August of 2015

What led you to start your own business?

An outlet to healing on my journey of being sober (2041 days as I write or 5 years 7 most and 2 days)

How does living in Oregon influence your business?

What is the most unique thing about JenStone Creations?

Being artistic was never something I considered myself good at until God opened that door. I enjoy what I do tremendously and could sit all day and paint.

What is your favorite thing about owning your own business?

Ability to be creative and making people smile.

How long have you been involved in the farmer’s market?

This is the first year I have been involved.

What is your favorite thing about the farmer’s market?

Being at the Farmers Market in Hillsboro as allowed me to show my work in an area where my art was unknown.

Easy Homemade Kettle Corn

Yields ~4 servings

Ingredients

1/4 cup ghee or vegetable oil
1/2 cup popcorn kernels
1/4 cup sugar
fine grain sea salt

Directions

1.) Heat ghee/vegetable oil in a medium sized pot over medium heat.

2.) Add a few popcorn kernels to the pan, cover it with a lid and wait and listen until the kernels have popped.  Once this has happened, add the rest of the popcorn kernels.

3.) Shake to distribute over the bottom of the pan. Then sprinkle sugar evenly over the kernels, and put the lid back on the pan.

4.) As soon as the kernels start to pop, shake pot gently back and forth over the burner, lifting it up and shaking from time to time. This keeps the kernels and sugar from burning on the bottom of the pan.

5.) Once the popping slows to every 2 to 3 seconds, remove pan from heat and dump kernels into a large bowl.  Sprinkle lightly with salt and toss with a wooden spoon.  Taste, and add more salt if desired.  Serve immediately.

What is the name of your business and what do you specialize in?

Batter Up! Waffles and waffle sandwiches.

When did you start your business?

We actually started 4yrs ago at the Hillsboro and Orenco farmers markets! We used the markets to prove our concept and see if we could turn our idea into a business. After 2 seasons, we took the plunge and opened our food cart at 185th & TV Hwy (behind Big Lots). We took last summer off to focus on the cart but are now doing both this summer.

What led you to start your own business?

I’ve always wanted to open a small restaurant and a food cart is a good segway into the restaurant business.waffles

How does living in Oregon influence your business?

Oregon and especially the Portland area loves food carts AND farmers markets. And we love doing both!

What is the most unique thing about your business?

Our baconsausage is custom made by Ponderosa meats in Aloha, just for us. It’s a sage country sausage that has bacon grinded into it as it is made.  Also, at the cart, we use cinnamon chip bread from Great Harvest Bread Co. in our Monte Cristo sandwich.  We met them them here at the markets!

What is your favorite thing about your business?

The customers. .. I’ve always liked the market because it puts me right in front of the customer. I love interacting with the customers. We have fun!

4 years now.

Community Profile: Hillsboro Food Co-op

The Hillsboro Food Co-op is a community-owned grocery store with no outside shareholders. Its goal is to bring fresh, local, and affordable produce to Hillsboro. Read on to learn more about how co-ops benefit communities, and about how you can be involved!

#4What is the name of your organization and what do you do?

Hillsboro Food Co-op is a community-owned grocery store startup coming to Downtown Hillsboro. The mission of the Co-op is to provide healthy, high-quality, affordable food to Hillsboro and its surrounding area while also serving as a community gathering place. The Co-op will emphasize productsfrom local, sustainable, and socially responsible sources, and it will work to build connections between customers and their farmers and other local suppliers.

When and how was the Co-op founded?

Hillsboro Food Co-op was incorporated in September 2013, and the membership drive began in May 2014. Before a food co-op can open, there needs to be a lot of community buy-in! Currently a handful of volunteers devote their time to outreach and membership recruitment. With the purchase of a $200 member share, an individual becomes a member-owner and literally owns his or her community grocery store! And membership has benefits: Discounts at the grocery store once it’s open, profits being returned to member-owners as patronage dividends, and the ability to vote in elections and run for the board of directors are all great perks! Once Hillsboro Food Co-op has 300 member-owners, the Co-op can move onto the Feasibility Stage where storefront options are considered, a market study is completed, and a business plan is started. After that, typically food co-ops progress relatively quickly toward construction and opening day!

#1What led you to start a Co-op?

Hillsboro Food Co-op has grown out of a need for year-round access to healthy, local food in Hillsboro. Member-owners all have their own reasons for joining, but common reasons include: Supporting local farmers and producers, desiring responsibly-produced food, having an accessible grocery store in Downtown Hillsboro, loving to build community, and hoping to see people of all income levels be able to eat healthy food.

What is the most unique thing about the Co-op?

Being community-owned! How often do community members get to collectively choose what type of business comes to town? Since there are no outside shareholders, profits are not the biggest motive, so food co-ops tend to be values-driven and a great addition to a community.

What is your favorite thing about being a co-op?

Hillsboro Food Co-op is bringing people together to do good for our community. That’s what being a cooperative is about.

How long have you been involved in the farmer’s market?

Hillsboro Food Co-op first had a booth at the farmers’ market in 2013. We have come a long way since then!

#2What is your favorite thing about the farmer’s market?

The farmers’ market is a lively place filled with people who are interested in knowing who their farmers are and supporting the great farmland we have nearby. We love when people make a beeline to our booth because they had not heard about the Co-op yet, and they are so excited to see that one is coming to town! Hillsboro Food Co-op and the farmers’ market have similar missions and values, so it is great to connect to so many co-op minded people in one place!
