On Saturday, August 23rd, Neilson and Kendra Maknarakham were married. Like most newly wedded couples, they were in their own blissful world and didn’t think much of it when they parked their car (complete with white lettering on the windows “Just Married”) in the parking lot at Orenco Station Hotel, where they spent the night.
They were surprised, when returning to their parked car, to find the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market @ Orenco Station had sprouted over-night. Since the well-known Farmers’ Market was in full swing, the newly married couple could not move their vehicle until the market ended for the day at 2:00pm.
When discovering that the new couple had arrived to move their car but would return later, Hillsboro Farmers’ Market Manager, Pat Rossetti, came up with a winning surprise for the couple. With only about an hour left in the market day, Rossetti devised a plan of action. In that hour, Rossetti went from vendor to vendor soliciting donations for the new couple. “Every vendor that I talked to was more than happy to give something to the new couple”, Rossetti said. In all, Rossetti collected a donated item from approximately 80% of the vendors creating a huge array of gifts for the newlyweds.
“All the vendors thought it was a great idea and I couldn’t have been more touched by their generosity” Rossetti stated. At the end of the market, Rossetti placed all the gifts in various boxes at the back of their car creating a wonderful display and huge surprise for Kendra Maknarakham. The new Bride was so surprised and moved by the generosity of the vendors that she hardly knew how to respond, “I just couldn’t believe how much stuff there was”, Kendra exclaimed in near tears.
Rossetti said, “it’s a small gesture on everyone’s part but when they are all combined together it has such a huge impact. What a great way to start out your new life, and who would have expected it?”
The new couple went on with their day, thankful, appreciative and maybe with a new understanding of what one small act can do. Rossetti hopes so too, adding, “I didn’t come up with the idea to get recognition, it just seemed like the right thing to do.” Maybe some day the new couple will pay it forward.
